How to Get a VA Home Loan Mortgage

One of the benefits that members of the armed services will have - provided they have the right eligibility and are either qualified veterans or active duty personnel - is related to purchasing homes. A VA home loan mortgage is a home loan that has been backed by the Department of Veterans' Affairs that will allow eligible and qualified members of the military to purchase a home with a secured mortgage that is likely to save them money over time (and up front as no down payment is needed).

Of course, in order to fully benefit from a VA home loan mortgage, you are going to want to be sure that you have access to information about the loans and about the application process itself.

If you think that you may be eligible to get a VA home loan mortgage, the first thing that you are going to want to do is to make sure that you are qualified. No matter what your status was, you are going to want to verify your eligibility by taking your military ID to your local VA card to do some research into it.

While you are at the Veterans' Affairs office, if you are a veteran you will need to gather proof of service. You'll want to get a copy of your DD 214, your military record and documentation of any awards that you earned while in service (and you'll want to make a copy of your military ID). If you are an active member of the armed services, you will not need to have a DD 214 to submit with your application.

Before formally applying for a VA home loan mortgage, you're going to want to take the time to research the benefit and the policies that back it as they do change from time to time. This information is available on the Department of Veterans' Affairs web site - as is the opportunity to apply for a VA home loan mortgage online. Of course, if you would rather not apply online, you will be able to apply in person at your local VA office.

Realistically, when you are applying for a VA home loan mortgage there is going to be a time when you need to go to the VA office even if you have completed the application online so that you will be able to provide a VA representative with the information and paperwork that they need to process your application. If you have questions about what documentation you will need when you apply for a VA home loan mortgage, you can call ahead to the VA office to obtain a full list.

Once all of the materials that you need to apply for a VA home loan mortgage and everything has been submitted to the Department of Veterans' Affairs, you will need to wait as the application is processed. During this process, you'll need to stay in contact with your bank and with your real estate agent so that they're aware of the status of your application and can best support you in the process of buying a home.
