How to Search for an FHA Refund

In some circumstances, there are home owners out there who purchased their homes with an FHA mortgage loan who may be eligible for an FHA refund. In other cases, there are homeowners who purchased their homes with an FHA mortgage that are going to be able to receive a share of earnings from the Mutual Mortgage Insurance Fund. The key, of course, is for home owners who may be eligible for an FHA refund to know where to look.

The first thing to do if you think you are eligible for and want to search for an FHA refund is to learn whether or not you paid an up front premium at the time of settlement. You're also going to need to be sure that you did not default on any payments and that your loan was taken out after September of 1983. Those who are eligible to receive a share of earnings from the Mutual Mortgage Insurance Fund will need to verify that their loan was taken out in August of 1983 or earlier, that the payments they made went on for seven years or more and the FHA mortgage insurance was terminated before the first week of November in 1990.

Ultimately, the FHA Commissioner will be the one who determines whether or not you are eligible for an FHA refund as well as the value of that FHA refund. Each FHA refund that is approved will be based on the amount of time that the home mortgage loan was insured; there are different conditions applied to mortgages insured at different times. For those who are searching for an FHA refund, some consolation can be taken based on the way in which an FHA refund is processed.

When your FHA insurance is terminated, the bank or other lender who provided your loan will notify the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The information that HUD receives will be evaluated to verify dates and other information. If you are due an FHA refund after paying off your mortgage, HUD will have a check paid out to you which you should receive within 45 days or you will receive paperwork in the mail during that time. If you are due a share payment, that application will be mailed to you.

Once you receive the paperwork to apply for an FHA refund, you're going to need to complete the application, be sure that it is not only signed but also notarized before sending it back to HUD; this is to verify that you were the property owner when the insurance was terminated on the FHA mortgage. Keep in mind that, if you are going to search for an FHA refund you need to do so within a set amount of time after paying off your loan.

Keep in mind that there are exceptions to eligibility that you are going to want to be aware of when you seek an FHA refund. By taking the time to understand all of the associated rules before applying for an FHA refund, you'll be able to better understand the process.
